Investment Strategy of the Central Investment Pool

The Central Investment Pool of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation pools the financial resources of its clients to obtain greater efficiencies and investment advantages.  This option is the most common choice of our donors.  Similar to a Mutual Fund, the Central Investment Pool is spread over a broad group of investment classes to ensure a balanced portfolio.   Its current value is approximately $34.0 million.

Investment Strategy is an important advantage of partnering with the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation.  Because of our collective size, we are able to retain one of the most well respected institutional investment counseling firms – Fund Evaluation Group (FEG) of Cincinnati, Ohio.  To learn more about the role of FEG, click here.

The Community Foundation uses investment managers within our community as well as respected national firms.  It is expected that equity investment managers remain in the top quartile of sector performers over the course of a full market cycle.  The Community Foundation currently engages the following investment managers for the following market sectors:

PIMCO Large Cap Enhanced
Barclays Alpha Tilts Large Cap Enhanced
M&I Trust Co. Mid Cap Growth
J. P. Morgan Mid Cap Value
Associated Trust Co. Small Cap Growth
Evergreen Small Cap Value
Artisan International Growth
Associated Trust Co. International Value
J. P. Morgan Fixed Income
Associated Trust Co. Fixed Income
US Bank Fixed Income
Gateway Funds Alternative

Reasonable Growth is the major objective of the investment strategy employed by the Community Foundation. It is the goal of the Community Foundation to achieve a 9.0 to 9.5% annual return over the course of a full market cycle.

70/25/5 is the balance of the overall portfolio.  70% of the portfolio is dedicated to equity investments spread across a spectrum of large, medium, small, and international stocks.  25% of the portfolio seeks current income through various long and short-term corporate and government bonds. The remaining 5% is invested in alternative investments.  Historically, this portfolio mix has shown relative stability while allowing investments to grow in the 9.0% to 10.0% range.

The Fee for the Central Investment Pool is currently 0.70% annually for investment management, plus an administrative fee based on the following fund balances (min. $180.00)"

First $2,500,000 0.70%
Next $1,500,000 0.50%
Next $1,000,000   0.40%
Remaining balance    0.30%

Administrative fees are assessed monthly based on the average daily fund balance.

Fund Evaluation Group

Fund Evaluation Group helps the Community Foundation by monitoring and reporting investment performance and by guiding the Community Foundation when making critical changes to investment strategy and/or investment managers.  Since FEG provides counsel but does not actually invest, they have no financial incentive relative to any investment decision.

An extensive search was conducted by the Community Foundation in consultation with FEG to select the best investment managers in Green Bay and across the nation.  Each investment manager was selected based upon its performance and investment philosophy in one of nine market sectors.
