Over $46,000 given to seven grants to non-profits serving the elderly in Door County

GREEN BAY, Wis.—July 28, 2010 – The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has awarded $46,352 to six non-profits through the R. Bruce & Alyce S. Kopseker Trust Fund.


The R. Bruce & Alyce S. Kopseker Trust is a field of interest fund that supports projects serving the elderly north of Sturgeon Bay in Door County by helping them remain healthy and independent in their homes.

Memory Care Connections received $7,352 for a program that provides assessments and supportive services for participants at-risk because of memory loss.  Memory Care Connections is a prevention, intervention, and support program for individuals experiencing memory loss and their caregivers in Door County. 


Family Centers of Door County, Inc. received $3,000 for their Food, Fun, and the Facts of Later Life Program. This series of workshops for residents ages 50 or older from Washington Island covers a variety of topics pertaining to issues that will help seniors remain healthy and independent in their homes.  In the past year, about 35-50 participants have had monthly nutritious meals and lively conversations thanks to this program. 


Door-Tran received an $8,000 grant towards their Voucher Program. This one-call communication center is working to offer affordable and accessible transportation for all travelers within, into, and out of Door County. The voucher program provides half price travel vouchers to Door County residents that they are able present to any participating transportation provider.  Door Tran, with the support of grants awarded by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation matched with private donations, reimburse the providers for the full value of the voucher.  Door Tran provided 456 trips specifically for Northern Door residents who were 60 or older in the first 14 months of the program.   The funds will enhance marketing efforts to this target population and cover the local match portion of their voucher usage.


N.E.W. Curative Rehabilitation, Inc. received $8,000 towards their Adult Day-Care Program in Sister Bay. NEW Curative has started an adult-day care program in Sister Bay, Door County to assist up to sixteen seniors who are 60 years or older living north of Sturgeon Bay.


The American Red Cross - Lakeland Chapter, Green Bay Branch received $10,000 for vehicle operations for their Door County Transportation Program. Currently the American Red Cross maintains six vehicles in Door County to provide low cost transportation for the elderly and disabled (one is located in Sister Bay and the others located in Sturgeon Bay).  The grant will cover portions of their fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses. 


The Door County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Inc. received $5,000 towards their Ministry Fund Program 2010. The Ministry Fund, or Katie’s Fund, provides for a wide range of needs, including prescriptions, housing rent, food and clothing, medical assistance, etc., primarily to the elderly in Door County to help them keep safe in their homes.


The Washington Island Community Health Program received $5,000. This community-based program provides information, connections, and local support in order to encourage successful aging, and has encouraged mainland organizations to establish their presence on Washington Island. Their primary target group is adults 65 and older, and they plan to serve about 150 seniors over the age of 60 on Washington Island.  The grant will cover some of the operating budget for 2010.
