Childcare and early childhood

Access to affordable, high-quality, culturally responsive childcare and early childhood education has short-term and long-term implications. From nurturing healthy child development and expanding workforce opportunities, to setting families up for self-sufficiency and children up for life-long success.

Affordability

In Brown County, the average household with two children spends 30% of its income on childcare (the threshold for affordability is less than 10%).

Survey Data

The percentage of adults who consider the community to have quality, affordable childcare options has dropped from 46.8% to 29% in the past decade.

Accessibility

Many rural parts of Oconto and Kewaunee counties are considered childcare deserts, meaning they have no regulated childcare options or not nearly enough to provide for families’ needs.

COMMUNITY ACTION

Our community is working on multiple fronts to address this issue. Efforts to expand childcare options in all communities throughout the region, improve compensation to providers, reduce cost to parents, and help employers develop solutions that will support their workforce.
