Diversity and equity

The need for greater equity intersects with every other issue facing our community. Ensuring all people are respected, valued, and given equal opportunities to succeed — no matter their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, religion, or any other factor — forges a path toward improved economic, social, health, and educational outcomes.

Economic Disparities

Black, American Indian, biracial, and Hispanic households in Brown County earn a median income that is 20-50% less than the overall average, contributing to higher rates of poverty.

Educational Disparities

Reading proficiency scores reveal equity gaps between children of marginalized populations and their white peers, the largest of which is a 31.3% difference.

Survey Data

Brown County survey data also shows 43% of non-White respondents identified themselves as currently thriving versus 65% of White, non-Hispanic respondents. A similar disparity exists within the LGBTQ+ community with 49.7% reporting they were thriving versus 59.4% of non-LGBTQ+ respondents.

COMMUNITY ACTION

The work to advance equitable opportunities needs to happen in both big and small ways. While efforts are being made by many individual organizations and groups across Northeast Wisconsin to provide services and bring awareness, there is a lack of a coordinated community-wide effort.
