Critical Community Needs
Mental health and well-being
The availability of affordable, timely, accessible, and culturally sensitive mental health services correlates to a community’s overall health and wellbeing. Improved mental health allows for stronger community bonds, better physical health, improved educational outcomes and employee productivity, and heightened community engagement, all of which contribute to a thriving and more resilient society.

In 2024, mental health and addiction resources were the second most frequent request to 211 in Brown, Kewaunee and Oconto counties.
From 2019 to 2023, Brown County saw an average of 40 people die by suicide each year. In 2023, the county experienced 45 deaths by suicide.
In Kewaunee County, mental health was identified as a top priority for improvement following a 150% rise in suicide deaths between 2019 and 2021. Mental health was also identified as a top priority in Oconto County after 78% of residents surveyed described it as a major to moderate problem.
Local survey data shows disparities in the mental health of youth and adults who identify as LGBTQ+. Brown County residents who identify as LGBTQ+ reported lower feelings of psychological and social well-being. Additionally, 85% of high school students in Brown County who identify as LGBTQ+ reported experiencing mental health concerns, while this figure stood at 45% among their heterosexual cisgender peers.
Through collaborations with Wello, Connections for Mental Wellness, Foundations Health & Wholeness, Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin and other advocates for mental health supports, and in partnership with those creating the pipelines of providers, we are building culturally responsive, accessible options.
